My Review: The Amazing Spider-Man

I had zero expectations for this movie. Prometheus, The Avengers, and the upcoming The Dark Knight Rises were the three films that I really wanted to see this year, and I never really paid much attention to this one. I thought that it was too soon to do a reimagining of Spider-Man and I thought that Andrew Garfield was an odd choice to play Peter Parker. But...I loved this movie! Andrew Garfield was great as the spandex wearning superhero. While I do think that he is too good-looking to play a guy who is supposed to be a nerd, I ended up really not caring. He has such long arms and legs, so he looks great in his costume and it look really cool when he is crawling up buildings. He is also just so awkward and adorable in this movie. Everytime he smiled in this movie I couldn't help but smile myself. This was especially true for the ending when he smiled at his Aunt. I also thought that Rhys Ifans was great as Curt Connors (oh those alliterative names!) the one-armed scientist who becomes a giant green Lizard in an attempt to grow back his arm using lizard DNA. I wish that they would have tried using make-up effects instead of CGI, but I suppose that that wouldn't have worked for all of the stunts they had him do. I do think that the CGI did look pretty cool though. It could have been ridiculous, especially when they had him talk, but I think that they did a great job with that. (And Rhys Ifans' voice helped). Emma Stone was adorable as aways as Gwen Stacy, and I think that her and Garfield were really cute together.
This movie was kind of an emotional rollercoaster to me. There were parts when I was laughing, parts when I was freaking out (like the part on the bridge with the kid), and there were even parts where I was crying. I actually started crying as soon as Peter let the thief get away because I knew what was going to happen next. There are also tons of really cool fight scenes. Stan Lee's cameo includes a very cool one. Now I will eagerly wait for the sequel which I hope will be as good as this one. My rating: 9/10

  1. No reason to exist whatsoever, but it’s still a fun, superhero flick that’s being released at a perfect time. However, I kept on being reminded of the original series every single time the film would touch on a plot-point. Too distracting for me at times, but I still had fun none the less. Solid review Charisse.
